Some people find travel exciting, whether it’s an anticipated vacation or a scheduled business trip. Others may feel stressed by the prospect of flying or being stuck in a car during a road trip. Some relish the packing process, choosing outfits and mini toiletries with care; others worry about the packing list and either under- or over-prepare. Some count down the days until an excursion with anticipation; others spend their pre-trip days filled with dread or anxiety.
While the world has adjusted and moved on after major events like 9/11 and the COVID-19 pandemic, global travel has been forever changed. Security checkpoints are stricter, and face masks are more commonplace in crowded airports around the world. For some, these changes may make the already-stressful travel process even more overwhelming. How many ounces of sunscreen can you bring in your suitcase? Are you allowed to bring a razor on your beach vacation? Why is the person next to you coughing without covering their mouth? And do they really sanitize those tray tables?
With so many questions already swirling, many people are looking for ways to make their travel plans less stressful and more simple. Many people have turned to CBD products to keep calm and collected as they go about their journeys but may be confused about whether it’s legal, safe, or convenient to take CBD with them.
While the rules vary based on location, mode of travel, and type of CBD product, we’re here to try to help simplify your questions about traveling with CBD and provide practical tips for flying with CBD.
Can You Travel with CBD Oil?
This question isn’t easily answered with a simple yes or no. It depends on the type of product, the amount of the product, your travel route, and your final destination.
If you are traveling to and within the United States, you can legally carry CBD products. They must be hemp-derived CBD products with 0.3% THC or less. Otherwise, they will be federally illegal and may be treated as controlled substances by federal authorities.
You can bring CBD oil in carry-on bags on an airplane in the United States, as long as it is smaller than 3.4 ounces per TSA guidelines. It must be in a clear quart-sized bag with all other liquid products to go through the Transportation Security Administration checkpoint. The same ounce rule would apply to any CBD lotion, cream, or salve. CBD edibles like gummies, as well as capsules or softgels, would just need to adhere to the rule of less than 0.3% THC in order to be federally legal under the 2018 Agriculture Improvement Act (Farm Bill) for usage within the United States. This federal legalization applies to hemp-derived products, but laws vary by state.
It's worth noting that unlike THC, CBD derived from industrial hemp is not considered an illegal substance at the federal level when it meets the legal THC limit. However, marijuana products and cannabis-infused products with higher THC content remain illegal under the Controlled Substances Act and are strictly prohibited on flights.
When traveling within the United States by road, the 0.3% THC rule is still in effect, but you don’t need to worry about the number of ounces in your product. Be aware when crossing state lines that state laws and local regulations may vary from federal ones, and follow all regulations accordingly. It’s a good idea to research your destination and your route along the way to make sure there are no surprises.
Understanding TSA Regulations
When flying with CBD, it's important to understand TSA regulations and how airport security handles hemp-derived CBD. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and TSA officers are primarily focused on aviation safety and detect potential threats, not enforcing drug laws. However, TSA agents must follow TSA's screening procedures. If a TSA security officer discovers what appears to be marijuana products or other illegal drugs during security screening, they may refer the matter to a law enforcement officer.

Can I travel with CBD internationally?

Best CBD Products to Travel Abroad
So you’ve done your research and ensured that you can bring CBD on your vacation, business trip, or other adventure…now what? Perhaps you already have a favorite, tried-and-true CBD product in your arsenal. But what if you’re looking for something new and different? How do you know the best type of CBD products to bring with you on the road (or in the air, etc.)? There are benefits to various CBD formats, depending on your unique needs and travel plans. Some formats and products are better suited for TSA rules, airport security, and plane rides, whereas other formats and products may make more sense when driving (or another mode of transportation that doesn’t require passing through TSA checks).
Softgels
Joy Organics' CBD Softgels are a no-nonsense, highly effective product to take on the go. These softgels are mess-free, convenient, discreet, and unflavored. Joy Organics’ CBD Softgels are made with nanoemulsion technology, making them more bioavailable—this is a fancy way of saying that your body has an easier time absorbing their contents. Softgels are easy to take—simply pop one in your mouth and swallow—with no hempy aftertaste. CBD softgels are easy to add to your daily wellness routine and may be easier to travel with than products in a liquid form.
Gummies
Flying in an airplane or fighting rush hour traffic can be a stressful experience. We recommend taking a vegan USDA-certified organic CBD gummy about a half-hour before traveling. (Be sure not to drive or operate machinery while taking CBD until you know how it affects you personally.) CBD edibles can also be easy to pack in your luggage to take with you on the go. These are also mess-free, discreet, and convenient—no need to worry about spills or liquid travel regulations. Gummies can also come in refreshing and invigorating flavors that can be enjoyable if you’re not interested in the unflavored options of softgels.
Tinctures
If travel stress builds, consider bringing Joy Organics' Broad Spectrum Tinctures with you. These THC-free formulas are carry-on friendly. Just make sure to keep it in a bag with other liquids to scan when you reach the TSA, and close the container tightly to avoid leakage or spills (although it can be difficult to ensure your tincture bottles remain upright during security checks or flight jostling). The Organic Full Spectrum CBD Tincture (unflavored) is an option that allows you to experience the full range of cannabinoids plus THC. It also is available in a Fresh Lime flavor. Tinctures are a great option if you’re looking for customization options; you can adjust the serving size to fit your personal needs, and even mix them with your favorite beverage. Tinctures may be a more messy or difficult format to travel with CBD when flying on an airplane, so you may want to consider softgels or gummies for ease of traveling through airports. They’re perfect for road trips or other modes of land travel, though!
Lotions/Creams/Salves
The stagnant cabin air and fans above your head can really dry out your skin in-flight. Consider packing a travel-friendly CBD roll-on to hydrate your skin. Toss this three-ounce moisturizer in the bag with your other TSA-approved liquids or toiletries. Roll-ons with CBD in them can be great for targeted support for muscles and joints in addition to skin hydration and comfort. If you’re already packing the sunscreen for a vacation, toss a travel-sized CBD topical in as well!
CBD+Melatonin
International flights and jumping time zones can mess with your sleep patterns. Help get accustomed to your new sleep schedule with Joy Organics' CBD & CBN Softgels with Melatonin for Sleep. You'll get the rest needed to be active during your daily travel adventures! While CBD products on their own can support a healthy sleep cycle and offer potential benefits of calm and relaxation, adding melatonin can be the extra boost you need to adjust to a new time zone, a noisy airplane seatmate, or an unfamiliar hotel mattress.
No matter which product you choose, there’s bound to be a type of CBD that fits your journey! As mentioned previously, though, always do your due diligence when planning a vacation or other travel plans. It’s your responsibility to know whether CBD is legally permitted at your destination or along the route. If you’re not sure, it’s best to leave your CBD products at home—better to be safe than sorry.
If you’ve confirmed that CBD is allowable per your mode of travel and destination, then you’re free to enjoy the potential benefits of the CBD products that best suit your needs. Enjoy the ride!
