The Ultimate Guide to USDA Organic CBD

04 June, 2026

Many CBD companies use the word “organic” to describe their products.

But not all organic claims mean the same thing.

In the CBD industry, there is a major difference.

Understanding those differences can help consumers make more informed decisions about the products they use every day.

What Is USDA Organic CBD?

USDA Organic CBD refers to CBD products made in compliance with the USDA Organic certification program.

The USDA Organic seal is not simply a marketing badge. It is part of a federally regulated certification program with strict standards related to:

  • Farming practices
  • Soil quality
  • Ingredient sourcing
  • Handling procedures
  • Extraction processes
  • THC removal processes
  • Manufacturing procedures
  • Documentation and inspections

Certification also requires ongoing oversight and accountability.

Products that carry the USDA Organic seal must meet these standards throughout the production process.

Organic vs USDA Organic

This is where many consumers become confused.

Many CBD companies use the word “organic” in marketing, even though their products are not USDA Organic certified.

Consumers often assume there are strict regulations preventing misleading organic claims. In reality, enforcement is limited, especially in the hemp industry.

That is one reason understanding USDA Organic certification matters.

A USDA Organic certified product must meet specific federal standards and undergo certification through an approved certifying agency.

Those standards are far more rigorous than simply using the word “organic” on your website.

Organic and USDA Organic Are Not the Same.

What Does USDA Organic Certification Require?

To carry the USDA Organic seal, products must meet strict requirements throughout the supply chain.

One of the most important requirements:
At least 95% of a product’s ingredients must be certified organic.

The remaining ingredients must also be specifically approved for use in USDA Organic products.

Certification requirements may include:

  • Certified organic farming practices
  • Approved materials and inputs
  • Detailed documentation and recordkeeping
  • Ingredient tracing and segregation
  • Additional inspections and oversight
  • Strict handling and processing standards
  • Ongoing compliance requirements

These standards are designed to create accountability and consistency throughout the production process.

Why USDA Organic Matters for Hemp Products

Hemp is a bioaccumulator, meaning it absorbs compounds from the soil and environment where it is grown.

That is one reason farming standards matter.

The quality of the soil, water, and cultivation process can directly impact the quality of the hemp extract used in finished products.

Not all hemp is grown under the same standards.

And not all CBD products are produced with the same level of oversight.

For many consumers, USDA Organic certification provides additional confidence regarding sourcing, handling, extraction, and production standards.

A Major Difference Most Consumers Never Consider

Many consumers assume that if hemp is grown organically, the final CBD extract is automatically held to the same standards.

That is not always the case.

The extraction and THC remediation process also matters.

Many extraction companies use conventional chemical or ethanol-based extraction and remediation processes that are not USDA Organic certified.

At Joy Organics, not only is our hemp sourced from certified organic farms, but the extraction and THC remediation process used to create our THC-free broad spectrum CBD oil is also USDA Organic certified.

That is a major difference very few consumers are aware of.

Getting the entire extraction and THC remediation process USDA Organic certified took years of work, inspections, documentation, and compliance.

This matters because the extraction process is a critical part of how hemp is transformed into the final CBD extract used in finished products.

USDA Organic certification helps ensure strict standards are followed throughout the process, not just during farming.

Why USDA Organic CBD Costs More

USDA Organic hemp extract is significantly more expensive than conventional hemp extract because of the strict standards and additional requirements involved throughout the process.

Organic farming often:

  • Produces lower crop yields
  • Requires more labor-intensive practices
  • Limits the use of many conventional materials and shortcuts
  • Requires additional documentation, inspections, and oversight

USDA Organic extraction and THC remediation also require:

  • Approved organic processing methods
  • Certified handling procedures
  • Additional compliance standards
  • Ongoing audits and oversight
  • Ingredient tracing and segregation

These added standards increase costs at nearly every stage of production.

At Joy Organics, the USDA Organic hemp extract we use costs more than 400% more than non-organic alternatives.

Why would a company willingly pay that much more? Because we believe quality standards matter. We believe consumers deserve transparency about what they are putting into their bodies. And we believe USDA Organic certification provides an additional level of accountability, consistency, and oversight that many consumers value.

Why Some CBD Products Cannot Be USDA Organic Certified

Even when companies use organic ingredients whenever possible, some products may still not qualify for USDA Organic certification.

Why? Because certain ingredients are not currently approved for use in USDA Organic products. For example, melatonin is not currently approved for use in USDA Organic certified products. That is why our Sleep Gummies cannot carry the USDA Organic seal.

This is another reason consumers should understand the difference between:

  • “Organic”
  • “Made with organic ingredients”
  • USDA Organic certified

These are not the same thing.

USDA Organic vs “Made With Organic Ingredients”

These labeling distinctions matter.

USDA Organic

Products carrying the USDA Organic seal must meet strict federal certification requirements, including the 95% organic ingredient requirement.

Made With Organic Ingredients

This phrase may indicate that some organic ingredients are used, but the product does not meet USDA Organic certification standards.

Organic Marketing Claims

Some companies use organic-related language in branding or marketing even when their products are not organic.  This is done to intentionally mislead consumers.

Consumers should understand that these categories are very different.

Why Joy Organics Invests in USDA Organic Certification

At Joy Organics, we believe consumers deserve:

  • Transparency
  • Accountability
  • Quality standards they can trust

That is why many of our products are USDA Organic certified.

We also believe consumers deserve visibility into how their products are produced.

In order to carry the USDA Organic seal, at least 95% of a product’s ingredients must be certified organic. The remaining ingredients must also be specifically approved for use in USDA Organic products.

Does USDA Organic certification apply to the extraction process too?

Yes. USDA Organic certification can also apply to the extraction and THC remediation process used to create CBD extract. This is an important distinction many consumers are unaware of.
