What does it mean to be beautiful? 

Is it the presence of certain physical features—such as facial averageness (where the facial configuration resembles the mathematical average facial configuration of the population), symmetry, skin homogeneity, and a particular body type? 

Judging by the people gracing the covers of glossy magazines and starring in blockbuster movies, one can’t help but come to the sad conclusion: yes, according to many. 

But real beauty—unlike the narrow, unrealistic ideals perpetuated by the mass media — is much more than a visual experience. 

What is real beauty?

The term “real beauty” traces back to Dove’s pioneering Campaign for Real Beauty launched 20 years ago. 

Discarding stereotypes, Dove broke with convention by featuring many shapes, sizes, and colors of women instead of “perfect” models in its ads—and the brand has continued to push back against toxic beauty standards to this day. 

While Dove hasn’t explicitly defined real beauty, here’s Joy Organics’ take, inspired by the Merriam-Webster dictionary’s definition of beauty (the quality or group of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or the mind).

Real beauty is …

• Loving and accepting yourself
• Being confident in yourself 
• Feeling good about and proud of yourself
• Taking care of yourself emotionally and physically so you’re the best version of yourself
• Understanding that beauty is present in everyone (regardless of age, size, ethnicity, etc.)
• Behaving with kindness and compassion
