The Complete Guide to CBD Tinctures

The Complete Guide to CBD Tinctures

How do you take your CBD?

There are, after all, several different methods of administration. From softgels or capsules that can be taken just like a regular supplement to edibles of all different kinds, as well as tinctures (drops) taken by mouth, several topical options, vaping and even suppositories, the ways to take CBD are numerous and varied.

Seeing that CBD can benefit pretty much everyone, it’s good to have options. For those who can’t swallow a pill, taking a tincture might be an option. Gummies also work well for finicky users.

Of all the various methods of CBD use, CBD tinctures are one of the most popular. And so, Joy Organics offers this guide to CBD tinctures.

What Is a CBD Tincture?

Joy Organics tincture dropperA CBD tincture, which can also be referred to as CBD drops, is a cannabidiol-infused liquid that is typically taken by mouth. CBD tinctures are concentrated and intended to be taken in small doses. Most CBD tinctures on the market come with a dropper that allows the consumer to take measured servings.

How to Take a CBD Tincture

There are a couple of different ways to take CBD tinctures. Here we’ll discuss both, so you know which route might be best for your personal needs.

Taken by Mouth

The most common way to take CBD tinctures is by mouth. To do so, simply measure out the desired serving you wish to take in the dropper, place in your mouth, then swallow.

While CBD works differently for everyone, on average it takes about 20-30 minutes to feel the effects of taking a CBD tincture.

Added to Food or Drinks

CBD tinctures can be added to soups, stews, smoothies and more if taking CBD in food is more your thing. CBD tinctures can also be added to your morning or afternoon coffee and can be a great addition to an evening cup of relaxing herbal tea (where you’ll get an extra kick of mellow thanks to the properties of both the tea and the CBD).

Keep in mind that adding CBD drops to your food will take longer to feel the desired effects than taking them directly. This is because CBD that is taken orally must pass through the digestive tract before it begins to do its thing. If you decide to take a CBD tincture with food like this, expect it to take at least an hour until you feel any effects.

How Are CBD Tinctures Made?

Like most other CBD products, CBD starts out as a mature hemp plant that is harvested and then processed to extract the cannabinoid-rich oil. The two most common extraction methods include:

  • CO2 Extraction (highly pressurized carbon dioxide under a low temperature is used to pull CBD and other compounds out of the hemp plant)
  • Ethanol Extraction (where hemp is added to ethyl or isopropyl to pull the CBD and other compounds out of the plant)

The result of both extraction methods is a thick, gooey substance rich in CBD and other beneficial cannabinoids and terpenes.

From here, the oil is then mixed into a carrier oil such as MCT (medium-chain triglyceride) oil. Our CBD tincture, for example, is made using organic extra-virgin olive oil or organic MCT coconut oil.

While we do carry a CBD tincture without flavor, we’ve found that not everyone likes this “natural” taste, which is why we also add orange, lemon or peppermint essential oil for added flavor options. This is something common throughout the industry, with CBD tinctures available in several different flavors.

The Pros and Cons of CBD Tinctures

CBD works differently for everyone, and depending on who’s taking it, there are both pros and cons to CBD tinctures. Some of the advantages and possible disadvantages of taking a CBD tincture include:

Pros

  • Compared to other forms of using CBD, a CBD tincture works relatively quickly. It is the second-fastest method of delivery next to vaping and can be taken by virtually anyone.
  • CBD tinctures can easily be mixed with food or beverages if taking directly is undesired.
  • CBD tinctures are easy to take and, when used with a measured dropper, offer an easy way to get exactly the serving you desire. Want to control your serving? Simply increase or decrease the number of drops you take.

Cons

  • For those who have difficulty swallowing, tinctures aren’t likely the best form of use.
  • CBD tinctures were not designed to be vaped. Not only do tinctures not burn well, but they create a thick smoke that can be especially harsh on the lungs.

Final Thoughts on CBD Tinctures

Joy Organics CBD tincturesrWith the plethora of CBD products to choose from, we hope this guide to CBD tinctures helped clear up any confusion and answered any questions you might have had. As one of the most popular ways to take CBD oil, CBD tinctures are available in several different strengths, sizes and flavors.

No matter what your reason for using CBD, tinctures offer an easy way to take it and work more quickly than most other options. When taken by mouth, CBD bypasses the digestive tract and liver, which not only speeds up how quickly you feel the effects, but also offers a higher bioavailability (the degree and rate in which CBD is absorbed into the bloodstream) than when taken orally.

While CBD tinctures might not be for everyone, they are one of the easiest and most effective ways to get your daily dose of the extremely beneficial cannabinoid.
