CBG and CBD are both non-intoxicating cannabinoids derived from the hemp plant, but they're distinct compounds that work differently in the body, appear in very different concentrations in the plant, and have different bodies of research behind them. What Are CBG and CBD?

Both CBG (cannabigerol) and CBD (cannabidiol) are phytocannabinoids — naturally occurring compounds produced by the hemp plant that interact with the body's endocannabinoid system (ECS). Neither is intoxicating. Neither will produce the high associated with THC. Both are legal when derived from hemp containing less than 0.3% THC under the 2018 Farm Bill.

Beyond those similarities, they're meaningfully different compounds.

CBG, a minor cannabinoid, was isolated in 1964 by the same researcher who identified THC, Raphael Mechoulam. It's present in much lower concentrations in most hemp plants — often less than 1% — because hemp converts CBG (specifically its precursor, CBGA) into other cannabinoids including CBD and THC as the plant matures. This is why CBG is sometimes called the "mother cannabinoid": it's the raw material the plant uses to build everything else.

Why CBG Is Rarer — and More Expensive

Understanding why CBG products cost more per milligram than comparable CBD products comes down to plant biology.

Early in the hemp plant's life, it produces cannabigerolic acid (CBGA), the acidic form and parent molecule of many cannabinoids. As the plant matures, enzymes convert CBGA into the precursor forms of CBD, THC, CBC, and other cannabinoids. By harvest time, the vast majority of CBGA has already been converted — leaving very little CBG remaining in the plant.

To produce CBG-rich extract, cultivators have two options: harvest plants earlier, before most of the CBGA has converted (which reduces overall yield), or selectively breed high-CBG hemp strains that retain more CBGA through maturity. Both approaches require more resources than standard CBD hemp cultivation.

The result is that producing a given amount of CBG extract requires significantly more plant material than producing the same amount of CBD extract. That cost difference is passed on in the price of CBG products. If you see a CBG product priced similarly to a CBD product with the same milligram count, it's worth looking closely at the COA to confirm the CBG content is accurate and to better understand the cannabinoids present, including THC content. This helps ensure you are purchasing a quality product with verified cannabinoid content and legal status.

How CBG and CBD Interact with the Body

The Endocannabinoid System

Both compounds work through the body's endocannabinoid system (ECS), a signaling network involved in regulating mood, sleep, stress response, appetite, inflammation, and more. Unlike THC — which also binds CB1 receptors but produces intoxication — CBG binds these receptors without causing a high and has a relatively low affinity compared to THC. Some researchers have proposed that CBG may also act as a GABA reuptake inhibitor, a mechanism associated with calming effects, though this has not been confirmed in robust human trials or clinical studies. Early research and anecdotal evidence also suggest CBG may have more targeted receptor interactions than CBD, which works indirectly by modulating the endocannabinoid system, and this could make it a useful complement in formulations designed to engage the ECS through multiple pathways simultaneously, combining CBG and CBD to potentially enhance the therapeutic potential.

CBD is among the most studied cannabinoids in human clinical research. Key areas that have been investigated include:

Do CBG and CBD Work Better Together?

The short answer from existing research is: possibly, and the reasoning is scientifically plausible, considering the different cannabinoids and their unique interactions with the endocannabinoid system.

The entourage effect hypothesis — originally proposed by Raphael Mechoulam (who isolated both CBG and CBD) — suggests that the compounds found in whole hemp plants, including various cannabis strains and their diverse cannabinoid profiles, work synergistically. Each cannabinoid, terpene, and plant compound contributes to an overall effect that may be greater than the sum of its parts.

For CBD and CBG specifically, the argument is mechanistic: because they engage the ECS through different pathways (CBD indirectly, CBG more directly at the receptor level), a combination may produce a more complete and nuanced interaction with the endocannabinoid system than either alone.
