Where Each Cannabinoid Comes From

CBD is synthesized directly by the hemp plant in large amounts. High-CBD strains are the most common commercial hemp variety, specifically cultivated to maximize CBD yield. CBD is typically 15–25% of a mature hemp plant's dry weight, making it the most abundant cannabinoid in hemp flowers.
CBG is the chemical raw material the hemp plant uses to build CBD, THC, and most other cannabinoids. Early in the plant's life, it produces CBGA (cannabigerolic acid), the parent molecule and chemical precursor. Enzymes then convert CBGA into the precursor forms of other cannabinoids as the plant matures. By harvest, very little CBG remains — typically less than 1% of dry weight. This is why CBG is called the "mother cannabinoid".
CBN forms after harvest, not during growth. When THC degrades through exposure to heat, light, or oxygen over time, it oxidizes into CBN. Fresh hemp contains almost no CBN. Aged or oxidized plant material — or deliberately processed extract — is the primary source.
How Each One Interacts with the Body
All three cannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), the body's internal signaling network that helps regulate mood, sleep, appetite, stress response, and more. The ECS has two main receptor types: CB1 (concentrated in the brain and central nervous system) and CB2 (found primarily in immune system tissue), where cannabinoids affect various physiological processes.

It works indirectly — modulating how other compounds interact with ECS receptors, inhibiting the enzyme that breaks down the body's own endocannabinoids, and interacting with serotonin (5-HT1A) and TRPV1 receptors involved in nervous system balance and mood regulation. Its mechanism is broad and indirect, which may explain its wide range of studied applications.
CBG binds more directly to both CB1 and CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system, without producing intoxication. It may also interact with alpha-2 adrenoceptors and GABA pathways — both associated with the nervous system's stress and relaxation response. Some researchers describe CBG's receptor binding as more targeted than CBD's, highlighting its role among different cannabinoids.
CBN has moderate affinity for CB2 receptors and weaker affinity for CB1 receptors — much lower than THC, which is why CBN doesn't cause a high or significant psychoactive cannabinoid effects. CBN also interacts with TRP channels involved in sensory and inflammatory signaling. Its mildly sedative properties observed in older research are believed to stem from its structural similarity to THC and its partial CB1 receptor activity, contributing to its calming properties.

Do They Work Better Together?
The entourage effect hypothesis — originally proposed by Raphael Mechoulam, who played a role in identifying all three of these cannabinoids — suggests that hemp's full array of compounds works better in combination than any single compound in isolation.
