Here’s our ultimate guide to CBD Gummies.
What’s a gummy?
The gummy bear was the first form of gummy candy. It originated in Germany where it is popular under the name gummibär or gummibärchen. The original gummy bears were made from gum arabic, hence the name.
A confectioner from Bonn, Germany named Hans Riegel, Sr. reportedly invented the gummy bear. In 1920, Riegel formed the Haribo company. A couple years later, inspired by trained bears he had seen at street fairs, he developed a product he called the Dancing Bear (Tanzbär)—a fruit-flavored gum candy which was much larger than the gummy bears we know and love today.
Seeing the success of gummy bears, other confectioners began to develop their own gummy candies in the form of, worms, snakes, fish, fruit, rainbows, lobsters, octopuses, and even Smurfs.
In recent years, gummy candies have been adopted by dietary supplement brands and infused with everything from multivitamins to CBD!
Today we can enjoy a vast variety of CBD-infused gummies.
What’s in CBD gummies?
Gummy bears today are typically made from gelatin rather than gum arabic. The gelatin is mixed with sweeteners, flavors, colors, and often citric acid for a little tartness.
CBD-infused gummies are made in the usual way. CBD is simply added into the mix. Some gummies contain a concentrated CBD-rich hemp extract, while other contain just pure CBD that has been isolated from the extract altogether.
This purified CBD is made by extracting the essential oils from agricultural hemp. Hemp is a non-buzz-inducing form of cannabis which is used for textiles and food as well as building materials, biofuel, plastics and much more.
Once the essential oil is extracted, it goes through a dewaxing process to remove solids, and then a distillation process to further concentrate the oil. Various levels of purity can be achieved in this way. They range from full-spectum—meaning it still has all the cannabinoids and terpenes found in the raw extract—to pure CBD isolate.
What are CBD gummies good for?
Over the past 25 years, research into CBD’s health benefits has ramped up exponentially. Today, there is a growing body of evidence that suggests that CBD may have a variety of medicinal and supplemental uses.

Now, let’s take a deeper look at some of the ways CBD is being used to improve quality of life.
CBD gummies may help you sleep
According to research, CBD can help to balance and stabilize circadian rhythms (daily activity and rest cycles). Many people who use CBD gummies claim that they not only help them to sleep better at night, but also have more energy and alertness during the day.
CBD gummies might chill you out and cheer you up
People suffering from mood disorders such as anxiety and depression commonly have low serotonin levels. Increasing serotonin levels generally increases feelings of wellbeing. CBD mimics a signaling molecule called anandamide, which is produced by the nervous system to stimulate the production of a hormone called serotonin in the brain.
CBD gummies fight toxins and free radicals
CBD is famous for being a powerful antioxidant. In fact, studies show CBD to be up to 10 times more powerful as an antioxidant than vitamin C. Antioxidants can be thought of as molecular mines. They attach themselves to dangerous molecules and destroy them.
CBD gummies might reduce your pain
Pain is associated with inflammation. In fact, most over-the-counter pain medications such as aspirin, Tylenol, and Ibuprofen all work by reducing inflammation. CBD has shown the ability to reduce inflammation and pain in numerous studies.
There are a myriad of other ailments for which researchers are studying CBD’s effects. Check out our comprehensive list of CBD’s potential benefits here.
Another interesting benefit of CBD gummies is that they can sometimes be used to reduce the effects of THC. They do this by blocking the cannabinoid receptors in the brain, making them immune to THC. If you were to consume enough THC to make you feel uncomfortable, anxious, and paranoid, eating a few CBD gummies might bring you down more quickly and lessen THC’s side effects.
How do CBD gummies work?
The human body is an unfathomably complex machine. That machine is controlled, for the most part, by the brain. Your brain cannot connect to every single cell in your body to figure out what’s going on and fix potential problems—it needs a messaging system. The central nervous system is a vast network of nerves found throughout your body that connect directly to the brain. This system monitors all bodily activity and reports back to the brain.
The brain then decides what changes need to be made to maintain health. When the brain detects that a system has gotten out of balance, it releases signaling molecules—such as endocannabinoids—which fit into receptors on the cells and instruct the cells to change what they are doing.
There a variety of types of receptors with corresponding neurotransmitters, each with its own particular set of functions. As it turns out, CBD and other cannabinoids have the ability to mimic some of these signaling molecules (such as anandamide, which we mentioned earlier). So, supplementing your body with CBD can have a wide range of effects.
Some of the non-endocannabinoid receptors that CBD interacts with include opioid receptors, serotonin receptors, and dopamine receptors.
Opioid receptors are the key targets of pharmaceuticals such as morphine, heroin, and fentanyl. CBD’s ability to interact with opioid receptors may be partly responsible for its pain reducing properties.
Dopamine receptors regulate certain aspects of behavior by rewarding behaviors upon which survival depends, such as eating and sex. A naturally produced hormone, dopamine is known to regulate moods.
Serotonin plays a vital role in reducing anxiety. CBD’s influence on serotonin levels is thought to be responsible for its anxiety-reducing properties. Serotonin is also thought to reduce cravings and addictive behaviors.
How do I use CBD gummies?
CBD gummies are just about the easiest way to get your CBD. Just pop them in your mouth, chew, and swallow. Done. The important question you need to answer is how many CBD candies should you eat?
Because they provide a pre-measured dosage or CBD, gummies are actually a great way to assure a consistent dose of CBD. This allows you to calculate how much CBD you’re actually consuming and how many gummies you need to reach your desired dosage.
For example, if your gummies each contain 10 milligrams of CBD, and you’re aiming for a dosage of 50 milligrams per day, then you would simply consume five gummies over the course of the day.
Most CBD gummies list their potency on the package. They generally range from 5 to 20 milligrams each.
How long do CBD gummies take to take effect?
CBD gummies can start to take effect within minutes of being eaten. Because CBD gummies are made from gelatin, they dissolve almost immediately in your stomach. This makes CBD gummies a much faster acting method of taking CBD than, say, CBD cake, for example. However, the full effect may take some time to come on and depends on how much food is in your system to begin with.
Once they take effect, CBD gummies’ effects typically last for 4 or 5 hours.
It’s best to use CBD gummies on an empty stomach if you want fast effects, and take them with food if you want more long-lasting effects.
