What Does Vitamin C Actually Do For You?

What Does Vitamin C Actually Do For You?

If you’re someone who runs for vitamin C whenever you feel the need for a wellness boost, you’re certainly not alone. Countless people count on vitamin C to keep them healthy and support their body’s natural defenses, but does it really work?

What does vitamin C actually do for you?

Let’s take a closer look.

What Is Vitamin C?

Also known as ascorbic acid, vitamin C is a water-soluble nutrient that acts as an antioxidant within the body. Not only does vitamin C play a vital role in the body’s fight against free radical damage, it is also necessary for the production of collagen which helps the body absorb iron and more.

Perhaps the most famous attribute of vitamin C, however, is its ability to support immune function. Its potent antioxidant properties lend immune support by promoting optimal function at a cellular level.

“Antioxidant” has become a bit of a buzzword in recent years. Let’s explore what it means. Quite literally, antioxidant means preventing oxidation. In terms that may be more helpful, antioxidants may fight the effects of free radicals, which are released when your body is exposed to certain toxins and stress or simply when you’re breaking down today’s lunch.

Free radicals can cause harm to your cells and leave your body vulnerable to a host of issues. They can be especially damaging your body’s natural immune response.

At the most basic level, vitamin C aids in keeping various systems in the body healthy and strong. It’s important for the health of skin, muscles, bones and blood vessels. It also helps the body absorb iron which we use for many purposes. Most importantly, it supports immune function.

How Much Vitamin C is Recommended?

Vitamin C is an essential nutrient the body needs to thrive. The daily recommended allowance of vitamin C is 90mg/day for men and 75mg/day for women.

Common foods containing vitamin C include:

  • Citrus fruits, including oranges, grapefruit and lemons.
  • Kiwi.
  • Strawberries.
  • Papaya.
  • Guava.
  • Cruciferous vegetables, including broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts.
  • Spinach and other dark, leafy greens.

Vitamin C supplements are also widely available in the form of pills, chewable tablets and more. Recently, Joy Organics launched our new Vitamin C + Herbal Complex formula, which not only has twice your daily value of vitamin C, but also zinc, garlic, elderberry, and other immune-supporting ingredients. It’s the perfect wellness boost whenever you need it!

Vitamin C is beneficial to your health and it plays an essential role in supporting immune function. Experts say that, for most people, one orange or a cup of strawberries per day provides all the vitamin C they need. If you’re not getting enough vitamin C in your diet, getting an extra boost in the form of a supplement surely couldn’t hurt.

Note: While taking too much vitamin C is unlikely to be harmful, extremely high doses of vitamin C (over 2,000mg/day) have been linked to abdominal pain, nausea and diarrhea. When in doubt, talk to your doctor.
