The CBD industry is booming, expected to be a $22 billion industry by 2022. The boom has helped with the growth of the health and wellness industry, various business industries, certain food businesses and many others. As more businesses take the dive into the modern-day gold rush known as the CBD industry, there’s a more accessible, diverse range of CBD products available on the market now.
As CBD products spread out in variety, topical treatments and CBD formulas are developed with the benefits of CBD for the skin in mind. As research on the cannabis compound becomes more easily accessible, we’re able to see in real-time what CBD can do for the skin.
With that being said, let’s look into CBD benefits for skin, who it would be ideal for and why cannabidiol might be superior to other topical skin treatments for certain conditions.
CBD Gets Skin Deep – Literally
In a collective study from the National Institute of Health, a compilation of studies suggested that the skin may have a functional endocannabinoid system (ECS). It’s already been found that the human body contains an ECS, as well as specific receptors in the brain that respond to cannabinoid compounds like the non-psychoactive CBD and the psychoactive THC.
If the skin has its own ECS, this cutaneous, superficial system could provide a physiological function of, essentially, providing homeostasis to the skin cells. This is a fancy way of saying CBD oils, salves and other topical treatments could repair, protect and nourish your skin. A functional ECS in the skin implicates CBD to potentially be helpful in a number of biological processes, from skin growth to hair follicle stimulation.
The NIH study indicates that consistent balance in the skin’s ECS can help to inhibit the development of various pathological diseases and conditions. While we can’t label CBD as a cure for any of these ailments, there is strong evidence supporting CBD as an aid for relief from itchy or painful skin, inflammation, psoriasis, eczema, allergic dermatitis, acne and more.
Depending on your condition, speak with your doctor about the amount of CBD topical treatment that is right for you each day. We offer both a 500mg and 1,000mg container of topical CBD salve and recommend you apply thoroughly as needed throughout the day, so the level of intensity and relief is completely up to you.
Inflammation and Pain Symptoms
Many of the current arthritis treatments on the market have negative side effects that are either attributed to the administration of the treatment or the active compounds in the treatment. A study in 2016 found CBD to attenuate pain and inflammation with no side effect. In fact, a rat model with arthritis was found to have reduced pain-related behaviors and inflammation when utilizing the compound.
The study was not performed with any ingestion of the compound, however. Instead, a topical CBD treatment was found to avoid the gastrointestinal administration phase, provide more constant plasma levels and passes through the metabolism faster. Transdermal cannabidiol provides a more consistent, longer-lasting effect than consuming it or using another method, based on these findings, though there is much more research to come.
Another study from 2014 helps to reinforce the 2016 findings of positive effects on inflammation and pain-related symptoms. This study observed the overall effects that cannabidiol has on the skin, including but not limited to the reduction of inflammation, reduction of acne and much more.
Because the ECS regulates cutaneous cell growth, differentiation and other physiological processes, it can behave as a highly effective sebostatic agent (which helps regulate the rate of “sebum,” an oil produced by our skin, in the body). This is why Joy Organics’ CBD Salve works to help you find targeted relief for inflammation and joint pain. Combined with aromatic essential oils, beeswax and other skin-nourishing ingredients, the topical CBD treatment works to support skin health and soothe discomfort.
Eczema and Psoriasis
CBD salves are specifically designed to address skin-specific conditions, so if you’ve tried everything and still have acne, eczema, psoriasis or another skin-related condition, it might be time to try a CBD salve. Unlike oils, which must be metabolized in the body through consumption, salves can be applied to a local, pinpointed area for the sharpest accuracy in treatment.
This makes CBD transdermal treatments incredibly valuable for those that experience the discomfort of psoriasis and eczema. Although not a magical, one-time cure, CBD salves and other topical options work to target inflammation and irritation in the sites they’re being absorbed into.
Our skin is already the ideal substrate to receive fast relief from quick absorption — it just takes using the right compound for the job. As soon as the product is absorbed, the healing and relief of symptoms is almost immediate.
While findings are incredibly promising, though, it’s important to remember that all of this is still being studied. The studies we have at our disposal are looking good for the conditions CBD might be able to help, but for now, we will sit back and watch history happen before our eyes.
Though we mentioned it above, it should be reinforced that CBD topical treatments are the new fighting powerhouse against acne. Dating back to 2010, a research paper titled “Cannabidiol as a Treatment for Acne?” observed endocannabinoids being directly applied to a line of cells. The results were immediate, “upregulating” lipid production from the CB2 receptors dramatically.
Acne is really just an inflammatory condition for the skin, a disease exclusive to humans since other animals have fur and an alternative skin type to maintain that fur. The skin within the zit, or blemish, is inflamed. Since we already perceived CBD to provide anti-inflammatory benefits, it wasn’t much of a jump to hypothesize that CBD might be able to help with acne as well.
During a similar experiment, suppressing or blocking the endocannabinoids using an antagonist drug dramatically suppressed the lipid production for these cells. Using these observations, experiments further determined that CBD had been shown to penetrate the skin through a transdermal patch readily and easily. Furthermore, low concentrations of CBD were effective in inhibiting the lipid production, but not the overall viability of the cells.
All these findings came back to the main point at hand that CBD creams, essentially, can work as zit fighters. Formulated with the right combining ingredients, such as vitamin A, you get a concentration that only fights cells that are pathologically increased (basically, if skin cells have transformed into blemishes).
Anti-Aging and Beauty Regimen
CBD topical treatments can contain anti-aging properties that help to further moisturize the skin, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles through stimulated collagen in the skin and much more. Hemp and cannabis are quickly rolling out for the beauty industry and for good reason. Depending on the ingredients combined with the cannabidiol, CBD creams can frequently contain other vitamins and nutrients that work together to bring homeostasis to the skin.
Some CBD products also contain Vitamins A through E, providing a substantial amount of nutrition without any trace amounts of THC. Because hemp molecules are incredibly small, they can penetrate deeper and more easily into the skin, making them superior to other creams and beauty products.
Not only do the assisting ingredients help CBD products with their anti-aging properties, but the CBD itself is an antioxidant. This antioxidant works to slow the aging process and reduce free-radicals from the body, which helps to balance and encourage oil excretion. Lack of oil excretion across the skin can lead to fine lines, wrinkles and dry spots.
On the other hand, using CBD creams can make your skin appear more youthful, healthy and firm as it plumps up your pores. Though this is what makes CBD helpful for psoriasis and eczema, it can also be used by other consumers for softer, younger-looking skin, along with the other many benefits that CBD products can provide anyone.
Joy Organics has picked up on a variety of CBD products to benefit everyday life, including some products that you don’t even have to consume. Rather than ingesting or inhaling to experience the beneficial effects of CBD, we offer an array of skincare products that repair, moisturize, enhance and refresh for a completely different skin regimen experience.
