CBD Oil at CVS: How Retail Chains Are Joining the CBD Movement
Forbes financial analysts stated that the CBD industry is poised to hit $20 billion by 2024. With big-name retailers jumping onto the CBD bandwagon, that projection might be smashed sooner than expected. Earlier this year, top pharmacy chain CVS announced it would begin carrying CBD products in select stores. Their largest competitor, Walgreens, followed up just days later to announce their intentions of featuring CBD products as well.
So, why are retail chains joining the CBD movement? Why are these large pharmacy chains carrying CBD? And what does that mean for the CBD industry? Let’s take a closer look.
CVS Sells CBD Products
The Rhode Island-based corporation known as CVS has been at the forefront of change in the pharmacy world. They were the first to take a stand against tobacco by refusing to carry cigarettes in their stores. Now, they’re looking to help people support their healthy lifestyles with CBD products.
CVS is taking a slow approach to their roll-out — CBD products are currently available at CVS stores in only 13 states:
- New Mexico
- South Carolina
- West Virginia
While not all CVS stores in these states are guaranteed to carry them, CBD products shouldn’t be too hard to find.
Why Is CVS Selling CBD Products?
There are a number of answers to this question. We’ll start with the most simple: CVS is looking for ways to add innovation to people’s approach to wellness. They showed they were willing to take a financial hit by banning the sale of cigarettes in their stores. From there, they took another loss by investing in their Minute Clinic program. This initiative allows people, including those who don’t have insurance, to get quick diagnoses, shots and prescriptions for common ailments.
These “financial setbacks” did wonders for the CVS image. People’s perception of CVS put them ahead of the curve in comparison to other pharmacy chains. The public truly believes CVS decision-makers want people to be well.
However, the CBD roll-out isn’t just because CVS has wellness in mind. It’s because their consumers do, too. As CVS Health Spokesperson, Mike DeAngelis, told NBC, “We are carrying hemp-derived CBD products in select states to help meet consumer demand for alternative care options.” The people demanded it, and like any wise corporation should, CVS provided. Now, what does this mean for the future of CBD?
Which CVS Stores Have CBD Oil?
With hemp now legal, it’s very likely that every CVS in America will eventually have at least one CBD product. CVS Health CEO Larry Merlo spoke to CNBC about the company’s budding interest in hemp. He stated that they aren’t going to rush into things, noting, “We’re going to walk slowly, but this is something we think our customers will be looking for.”
Currently, there are over 9,800 CVS stores. It’s wise for CVS to start selling CBD in a market that has a strong demand, see what their customers are buying and introduce it to the rest of the market.
As a CBD company, we at Joy Organics find this very exciting. Big-name retailers can open the door for many hard-working companies who provide high-quality products.
What You Need to Know About CBD Oil at CVS
Currently, CBD is not well regulated. As a pharmacy, CVS looks at this as a potential liability. That is why their online catalog of CBD products is labeled under “alternative care.” The lack of regulation has also influenced how CVS officials choose CBD products to carry in their stores.
For instance, the corporation doesn’t plan to include any CBD ingestibles in their stores. They are sticking strictly to salves, balms and lotions. They already carry 25 different items in their inventory.
Shopping Smart for CBD Oil at CVS
As with any store that offers a variety of products, CVS stores carry a number of different CBD products and brands. You should always do some research to make sure you’re purchasing the product that best fits your needs.
How to Find High-Quality CBD Oil at CVS
We can tell a lot about a CBD product just by looking at the ingredients label. You should hold all products to the same standards.
Here are some characteristics to look for:
- Low ingredient count
- Quality ingredients first
- Ingredients you can pronounce
Ever hear of too many cooks spoiling the soup? That’s true for CBD topicals as well. The more you add to the product, the more chemical compounds are going to penetrate your skin. You want to stick to ingredients that will benefit one another, not complicate things.
For extra security, you can visit the CBD company’s website and see if they offer third-party lab reports for you to review. (Hint: They should.)
CBD Oil and Walgreens
It is clear that CVS is being very cautious with their CBD products. That’s why they’ve been very selective about which products they carry and which markets to sell them to. With the popularity of CBD growing every day, the pressure to serve all 50 states might come sooner rather than later.
While Walgreens announced their intentions to sell CBD just days after the CVS announcement, their offerings are a bit different. Walgreens carries CBD products in 18 states compared to the 13 under the CVS umbrella.
Walgreens also has a larger catalog of hemp-based items. Like their competitor, Walgreens carries CBD topicals. However, they also sell patches and sprays. Following the precedent set by CVS, it doesn’t look like tinctures or edibles will be included in Walgreens’ official offering.
The first states where Walgreens offers CBD include:
- New Mexico
- South Carolina
Just as you should do your due diligence with CVS products, also read the labels at Walgreens, Wal-Mart and everywhere else you see CBD popping up. If you are not in a state where CBD products are rolling out in local pharmacies, you don’t have to miss out.
