CBD Oil For Dogs Explained
Dogs are family and they love us unconditionally. That’s why we would go to any length to keep them healthy and happy. Like humans, many modern dog breeds are suffering from diseases and disorders that decrease their quality of life.
Research into the effects of CBD has shown that the compound directly and indirectly activates the endocannabinoid system. This system is responsible for attenuating the immune and nervous systems, as well as many other bodily functions. Targeting this important system is why CBD can improve the health and wellbeing of both humans and dogs.
CBD Oil For Dogs — Is it Safe?
Yes! CBD, or cannabidiol, is a compound extracted from the cannabis plant, which is also referred to as marijuana and hemp. CBD, along with THC, comprise the two main cannabinoid components of the cannabis plant.
THC is the compound responsible for the psychoactive side effects of cannabis while CBD does not have any psychoactive properties.
Dogs may be especially sensitive to THC as they typically express an abundance of CB1 receptors in the brain. So, if your CBD product contains THC, it may cause unwanted side effects associated with marijuana in your pup. You avoid this primarily by purchasing CBD derived only from hemp.
As long as your CBD products are quality, clean and labeled correctly, you shouldn’t worry.
So, yes it’s safe, as long as the product is free from contaminants, contains little to no THC and has been tested for purity.
Why Use CBD Oil On My Dog
When the ECS becomes imbalanced, illnesses, diseases and disorders can develop. In some cases the imbalance may be due to a clinical deficiency in endocannabinoids, while in others it may be due to a dysfunctional ECS.
There are many factors to consider in determining how illness may develop in dogs and humans but research continues to suggest that there is often an imbalance within the ECS correlated with many different health issues.
Supplementing the ECS with phytocannabinoid extracts from plants such as cannabis may help bring balance back to the ECS.
CBD products are available across the U.S. and in some other countries, but there has been little regulation and oversight of the market and products. This is why it is of the utmost importance to buy CBD products with discernment and education.
Here are a few tips to help you navigate shopping for CBD oil for dogs.
- CBD Products – CBD dog treats are available, but can be difficult to manage a dosage regiment. Finding an oil or tincture that easily be titrated and measured may be more beneficial for your dog
- High-quality CBD oil isn’t cheap. If you’re shopping for the cheapest CBD products you may risk buying products that could be contaminated with toxins, or possibly contain less or more CBD than actually labeled. Stay safe by buying high-quality CBD products.
- Chemical Analysis – A high-quality CBD product will provide a lab analysis done by a third party that will tell you how much CBD and possibly THC the product contains. If there is no analysis provided, then you don’t know how much, or how little, CBD you’re actually giving your dog.
- Buy All Natural – Many CBD products are sourced from industrial hemp, which can be potentially contaminated with toxic pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals and chemical solvent residues. Buying naturally derived products guarantees that you’re not dosing your dog with toxins.
Serving Size of CBD Oil For Canines
CBD is safe and non-toxic with no adverse side effects. That being said, each pup and person will react to cannabinoid therapies differently. It’s because of this that dosages should be adjusted for each individual.
Methods for using CBD in dogs are the same as with humans. The only difference is that CBD dosage in dogs is determined by body weight. Let’s go over a commonly recommended regimen for administering CBD to dogs.
Just as in humans, the first step of administering CBD begins in low doses. It’s important to administer low doses at first in order to see how your dog will react.
If your dog gets a great benefit from just a little CBD, then great! Quality CBD products are expensive, so you don’t really want to be giving them more than they may need to feel well.
If you are using a tincture or CBD oil product that can be titrated with a dropper or into gel capsules, then start with 0.05 mg CBD per pound twice daily. So if your dog weighs 20 lbs., you would administer 1 mg of CBD oil twice daily.
1st Stage – 0.05 mg CBD x lb. / twice daily
Administering a low dosage for one week will give you and your pup a clear answer to what CBD’s effects will look like. If your pup shows clear signs of benefit from this dosage, then continue as needed for two or three weeks.
If after one week you feel that your dog needs a higher dosage to experience relief, then you can move on to the next level of administration.
2nd Stage – 0.125 mg CBD x lb. / twice daily
For example, if your dog weighs 20 lbs. then you would be administering 2.5 mg twice daily. Again, try this dosage level out for a week and if your pup responds with wellness than you’ve found your appropriate dosage.
If after two weeks you see little or no benefit, you can increase the dosage to stage three.
3rd Stage – 0.25 mg x lb. / twice daily
For example, if your dog weighs 20 lbs. then you would administer 5 mg twice daily. Administer this amount for a week and watch for signs of better health and relief from symptoms.
Higher dosages can be given without concern of overdosing or intoxication, but it’s always best to first begin in small dosages, only increasing the amount of CBD administered as needed.
CBD’s Effects on Anxiety & Depression In Dogs
It’s absolutely incredible how many seemingly different conditions can be effectively helped with CBD. Many dogs have issues with anxiety from being left alone all day while their owners are at work.
CBD binds with specific receptors in the brain responsible for the experience of stress-related anxiety. This means that CBD may be of great benefit for dogs with separation anxiety, trauma, and high stress levels.
CBD also binds with the neuroreceptors responsible for balancing hormones and emotional stability. This means that for dogs with depression, CBD can help uplift their mood. Dogs with mood swings and irritability may also feel more balanced emotionally from taking CBD.
CBD’s Effects on Chronic Pain & Inflammation
Chronic inflammation is often the cause of health issues and it most frequently coincides with pain. But dogs don’t express pain and discomfort in the same way the humans do, so it can be difficult to know how much pain your dog is in.
If your dog has limited mobility or motivation to be active, it may be because of pain, which may be due to chronic low-grade inflammation.
Pain and inflammation may also be due to an acute injury or surgery. The good news is that CBD can address pain and inflammation from both chronic and acute conditions.
CBD targets special pain receptors in the body and essentially triggers them to send fewer pain signals to the brain. CBD may also be able to trigger the immune system to produce less inflammation, essentially putting on the brakes to damaging or chronic inflammation, also reducing pain in the process.
With less pain and inflammation, your dog may find it easier to move around and play, experiencing a better quality of life. While it may be difficult to tell if your dog is in pain, it’s pretty easy to notice when your dog is feeling healthy and happy. Check out this awesome story from someone who gave her pup Joy Organics CBD Dog Treats:
“Today makes 5 days of our dog being on the CBD dog chews. She went from being bedridden and us having to help her outside to go to the bathroom to walking herself outside today through the doggy door and down the stairs, then back up the stairs. I also just witnessed a complete miracle tonight. She decided she was going upstairs and made it all the way up by herself!” ~ Laurie
